Call me biased, but if an ageing bloke with a weak ankle can pedal a real bike up some of the steepest streets in the world, why would a teenager need a bike that does most of the work for them (even on the flat)?
All the work = all the fun. E-bikes bemuse many serious cyclists. We have legs, we don’t need a motor.
For those who do, please don’t be offended by my thoughts on the matter – it’s all a question of personal choice – but be aware that while some of these monster climbs in the southern areas of Almaty might be easier with the aid of an e-bike, there are now restrictions placed on their use in cities.
Given that electric bikes can reach quite high speeds, they are classified as mopeds in Kazakh law and are therefore not permitted to be ridden on pavements, according to Deputy Interior Minister Igor Lepekha, and reported by Kazakhstan Today.
E-bikes are growing in popularity, and while perhaps us stubborn old traditional cyclists don’t need to be too concerned, the Deputy Minister explained that:
“Electric bicycles, regardless of their power, are classified as mopeds. So, as of today, riding an electric bicycle on a pavement is prohibited and constitutes a violation. This provision has already been established by law. We will hold riders accountable in the same way as [we do] moped owners.”
The good news for converts to this far less challenging way of cycling (just my opinion), is that there are a range of amazing choices for e-bike riders in the Almaty area.
The Oi-Qaragai mountain resort has some great routes that can be enjoyed without needing to push yourself to your absolute limits (which to many people is the whole point) and as per their website:
You can now climb to the brightest spots of the gorge and enjoy the beauty of the mountains without harming nature, thanks to our electric bike tours! The bikes are absolutely silent, have no harmful emissions and do not affect the flora and fauna of our beautiful mountains.
Qazaq Adventure, similarly, allows you to experience the amazing beauty of the area:
We offer thrilling electric bike tours in the Almaty region, perfect for sports enthusiasts and mountain lovers. Explore vibrant gorges and breathtaking peaks on silent, eco-friendly e-bikes, guided by experienced instructors, ensuring a safe and unforgettable adventure without harming nature.
Another amazing destination for e-bike riders is Big Almaty Lake, with vehicles available for hire in several locations down the valley.
This user recommends the experience very highly, while making it up to the lake on a real bike is likely to feel like one of the most exhilarating things you ever did, so choose wisely.
Meanwhile, it is advisable to follow all safety precautions when charging e-bikes. This link below, while not issued by a Kazakhstani authority, is a comprehensive and sensible guide for any user.
